Whilst loving art as a child, Valerie only began her art journey in earnest in 2006, and has trained extensively in oil painting with some wonderful, talented teachers.
Valerie has a fascination with the history and atmosphere of places, which she seeks to convey through her colourful, expressionist artworks. Her garden and the local countryside are a constant source of inspiration. Her background as a hypnotherapist lends a deeper psychological aspect to her work too.
Whilst she is predominantly a landscape painter, figurative and portrait work has featured in her portfolio.
She lives with husband, Mark, and has a home studio in Fordingbridge, close to the New Forest and the Hampshire/Dorset border landscapes. Valerie is a grand and great grandmother, and enjoys spending time with family and friends, walking, yoga, reading and gardening.
Valerie takes part in Hampshire Open Studios, regional art exhibitions, the Salisbury Art Trail and the Salisbury Art Scene events. She also sells work from her website and visitors are welcome to arrange a visit to her home studio. Her paintings feature in several UK collections.
My work seeks to convey the magic and atmosphere I sense in the landscapes around me. The excitement certain moods, memories or colour combinations evoke for instance. I love the feel and smell of oil paint, the rich colour, and the versatility of the medium. Oils give me the best way to express myself artistically.
In 2019 we built a new home at the end of our existing garden. We rescued our beloved roses from the ravages of the building process and established a new garden. What a joy this was during 2020, and what a source of inspiration. I felt like Monet!
This garden is still giving sources of reference for current projects, exploring new and more exciting ways of expressing flowers and plants. Exploration of the garden and landscape as a source of sanctuary in these difficult times is at the forefront of my work currently.
